Christmas Turning

Here are more Christmas gifts. I’ve been staying busy on the lathe. These are just the basic wine bottle stoppers and bottle openers. I’ve started on a kaleidoscope and perfume sprayer. I just have to put finish on the kaleidoscope. The perfume sprayer came apart on me when I got down to a crack in the wood. Yes….there a few curse words. I’ve been experimenting with finish a lot. Most of these are super glue finish. Others have wax, Danish oil, Tung oil, wood turners finish, or gloss lacquer. They’re made from several kinds of wood and some acrylics. The wine glass shapes I didn’t think of till the end. I’d like to try a few more of those. I’m taking a break after Christmas though.

Merry Christmas!

Very nice collection. Certainly should be able to fill a few stockings with all of that. I like the wine glass bottle stoppers.

A great range of colors! Nice idea on the wine glass theme as well.

Wow you were busy! Those were great!!!

I have question… What is your method for connecting the stock for the wine bottle holders? The bottle openers? To your lathe to turn?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Nice collection of turnings. They look good.

You can buy mandrels that screw into the wood and mount into a drill chuck. That’s what I did anyway. One thing to note is there are multiple sizes and threads of stoppers and mandrels. The bottle opener top and the wine stopper blanks I get have the same size thread and diameter at the top. So I use the same mandrel for both. If you want to the stopper/bottle opener to match in size where the wood meets the chrome, just turn it down to the same size as the bushing. Other then that, I just make sure my turning blank is square on each end, mark center, drill, and tap the hole before screwing it onto the mandrel.

Check out this link I don’t get all my supplies here but I do like their mandrels. I had trouble finding one with a smaller bushing and 3/8” thread. They are very helpful if you call them with questions about getting the tool you’re looking for.
