Box for my sister No-picture-s No-picture-s Click the pictures to enlarge them

I made this box for my younger sister for her birthday. She likes cats (and has a couple) so I decided to put a cat on the front sitting on the bottom ledge. It is made out of curly maple, paduak, mahogany alowood, ebony alowood, and purple heart, yellow heart, walnut and aspen for the inlay on the lid. I alternated endgrain and long grain in the inlay to give it sort of a plaid effect. I found the curly maple at a local home hardware store and bought the few small pieces they had. The picture really doesn’t show the curly nature of the wood very well but it really “moves”. The lid is hinged at the rear.

ARE YOU TELLING THE TRUTH? You’ve been woodworking since January? Then my hat is off to you mister Journeyman. Way to go…..

Very nice indeed. If you started working with wood in Jan. There is no telling what you might do once you’ve learned how to work with wood. LOL. Very well done my friend.

This is a beautiful box. I am sure that your sister loved it.

Very well done.

By the way, with your next post, go ahead and add additional pictures. Showcasing your work from different angles and showing the inside of the box gives us a better view of the overall construction of the project.

Thanks for sharing.

Very nice box. January….really?
Gotta ask. How did you get that cat to sit on the shelf w/o breaking the tail off?

For the cat I first cut out the outline on the scroll saw and then measured the amount to remove from the tail. By standing the cat on its edge I was able to cut off the excess with the scroll saw and then sand/chisel the last bit to fit nicely.

In Hindsight it would have been a LOT easier to make the overhang first and then cutout the cat (front side down on the scroll saw).
