This is not my favorite but I figured I would post anyways. This was made from african blackwood.
Very dense and very difficult to work. This was a “disaster” project. everything went wrong. This wood destroyed my drill bit, dulled my trimmer. dulled my lathe tools, and one blank even exploded while on the lathe. Because its so expensive. I actually picked up all the pieces from around the shop and CA glued them all back together using aluminum foil and c clamps. you cannot even tell the upper blank on the pencil is actually about 15 different pieces. Im just glad this on is done. And yet I know I will order more of this wood.

African blackwood is the only wood so far out of the 30+ I have tried that I cannot do anything with. I’ve tried 3 or 4 pieces. None of them even made it off the drill press whole. It’s nice to see what the finished product looks like!

For my really dark pieces I am now using Katalox (Mexican Ebony). By far one of the easiest species to turn, sand, and finish
