Yin Yang

I made this as a gift for a friend. Since I had to cut the Yin Yang symbols from single pieces I made two boxes. Inverse of each other to further the ‘Balance’ theme. Maple, walnut, bubinga and cherry with wenge edging. About 8 inches square. She got one and I kept the other.

Was also my first attempt at finger joints. I made a simple jig that clamps to my table saw sled. Worked like a charm. Thanks for looking.

They are very nice looking boxes. I can’t help but wonder if the yin and yang has a special meaning to your friend or you just came up with a wonderful idea?

Great boxes such a nice design

Total harmony & balance

The sliding pieces are just the cherry on top.

Very nice project. Did you give the light color to your female friend and keep the dark for yourself? I seem to recall that the dark is for the male and the light for the female—-opposing forces of the Ying & Yang (or, maybe it was the other way around, but the women usually want to be thought of as the light, good force so the foregoing is the safest approach).

LOL HillBillyShooter, you made me go and look. She did in fact get the Light one. Phew.

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Yin and Yang are irresistable – and using them to open and close the box – wow.

Great stuff.

The lid is a really nice touch… And for your first time with a finger join wow, I wish my first attempt was this nice.
