Sharing with you guys a chess set I made for my recently concluded exhibit.
All chess pieces are whittled from kamagong (Ebony) and Molave (Philippine teak for the white pieces) Each piece is weighted. All The board’s outer frame is made from balayong with amboyna burl inlays. The white border is Manggachapuy while the black squares are malabayabas and the yellow squares are of Langka (jack fruit) The leg is hand carved Saplungan and its base is dungon (iron wood) All woods used are reclaimed as with all my other projects.
Any wood buddies from Adelaide?
Have a great weekend!
Benji

Lots of people make chessboards, but the craftsmanship here is simply sublime. You are a master, Benji!

This is magnificent! Without question, it is more than a board with some playing pieces-it belongs in a museum for the whole world to see. Another masterpiece. Thanks so much for sharing…......

:)
I get excited when I get an email telling me that Benji has posted a project.
I went and made a cup of tea, waited for it to steep, then poured a cup.
Made sure that I wasn’t needed elsewhere for the next few minutes.

Then I opened the link.
It was worth the wait.

I just don’t know what to say about your work.
I’ve run out of appropriate words.

wow.

May I ask, How long did this take?

Thanks for sharing.

Benji,
Exciting to know that even the chess, you have an extraordiary pieces that only hands can do the carving. What else? Maybe a jewelry box….kahalahas.
Keep it going.

I too loo for the ‘Benji’ emails that announce another masterpiece waiting for view! As with your other pieces, this one magnificent work. Congratulations on a brilliantly executed artwork. Would love to see a Benji-Clock next!!!
