Really just kind of free. The entire bookcase was made from leftovers materials from when I installed wainscoting in my daughter’s bedroom. This worked out great because not only would it match the room, but I wouldn’t have to spend a dime. The build process was almost identical to the wainscoting install, but with a shelf and a top. As usual, I took too long to finish it, but my wife was really happy and so am I. Plus it keeps all of my daughter’s books off of the floor.

Nice use of leftovers. Classic look with this unit.

Very nice! We really need more painted pieces on LJs. I forget just how nice painted WW can be. Well done!

Thanks for the compliments. I think a lot of guys here go by the same adage that my father passed onto me:

You stain good wood, you paint the cheap stuff.

Making stuff out of MDf is a love hate relationship, it is cheap and relatively easy to work with, but makes a huge mess and takes a lot of work to get it painted. I think this took about 5 coats of paint to get good even coverage.

Your small book shelf looks great. I like the style and I also agree with your father’s adage (You stain good wood, you paint the cheap stuff) ....all the best
