Mantelpiece

This has been a 5 year project. My dear wife stomps her foot and wants a mantelpiece before Christmas. As you can see all I had to work with was brick veneer and 2 holes that was once a wooden bricks. The old mantelpiece was nailed to these two bricks. It fell down when one of my kids had a party, when somebody put a large firecracker in the fire place. Or so the story goes.

So I came up with the idea of the expandable blocks seen in pic 3 and 4. After that it was easy. Built the frame with two torsion boxes with the long front. On top of that a 9” oak board with rounded corners.

The first picture shows the nearly finished product before plugs, stain and finish. All in all a fun project once the ideas were in hand.

Comments are welcome.

That is great. I need to do something better to my mantel and this will definitely be a reference point for me.

-- If I can't make it, I probably don't need it.
