My first chessboard. It is veneered MDF with edgebanding in a mitered frame. The pieces were purchased from a chess retailer.
Materials
Veneer Top: Sapele & Maple
Veneer Bottom: Ash
Edge Banding: Wenge & Yellowheart
Frame: Goncalo Alves (Tigerwood)
Substrate: 1/2” MDF
Finish:
Spit-coat of Zinsser dewaxed shellac
7 Coats of Deft Clear Gloss Lacquer
-Polished from 500 grit to 4000 grit
The construction was awfully similar to that of an end grain cutting board, (aside from the veneer, edgebanding and frame of course). I decided to go with MDF as a substrate since it was going to be completely covered.
I will be making a matching box to hold the pieces.
Thanks for looking.

Outstanding chess board…really like the wood combo.

Great job, I made some a while back and they big hits like yours I’m guessing.
