When all your brother-in-law wants for Christmas is a cheap plastic comb, the least you can do it put it in a nice box. This one’s made of cherry, and uses Shipwright's great integral hinge idea. The inserts are styrofoam with black velvet attached using 3M spray adhesive. Finished with wipe-on poly and wax.

That’s one heck of a box for a comb! Great job.

Now that’s thinking outside the box! Great looking hinge and the mangnetic catch makes it easy to open!
I hope his gift matches the bathroom decor!

This is a great looking box, and the job you did on the hinge is excellent.

Great looking box, and beautiful hinge, but a purple comb?

Thanks, guys, for the kind words.

Oldtool: There’s a story behind the purple comb that’s way too long and way too boring to bother with here. Suffice to say that this is not just any purple comb, and that the recipient will understand and appreciate it fully!

Great job on this box, and many thanks for the link to Shipwright’s hinge (this was posted before I became aware of LJs and intend to use it). And, thanks to Shipwright!

Not just a hinge but on a mitered corner. Impressive!

Not just a hinge but on a mitered corner.

Yup. I scratched my head for a while over that little detail.

Great box and SUPER job on the hinge. I’m still scratching my head on how you accomplished that on the mitered corners. Maybe post a few pics/blog on how you did that?

Russ,

Your box is elegant! Wonderful choice of wood and beautiful craftsmanship! Really like the magnet closing. Shipwright’s hinge adds to its charm. (I used Shipwright’s hinge on my one-and-only box several months ago—on mitered corners—and I was amazed at the simplicity. His instructions made it amazingly easy—even for a dummy like me.)
