I moved to a resort area to work in a lumberyard and found out I had not heat in the office. I had lots of corner room so I installed a fireplace. The mantel was a 4×4 and 2×2 douglas fir I pulled out of the yard. I then took my grinder with a wire wheel attachment to the boards. It really chewed up the soft wood between the grain and gave kind of a drift wood look. This really brings out the characteristics of the grain and knots as well. I then stained it and created the waterfall look with the 2×2 and finished with split face marble for the front. I wish I had better pictures of this because this one does not do it justice.
