Project Information

These sets started when a friend from work saw my last Cherry Set. He wanted these for his Father and Father-in-law for Xmas. Since it takes me so long on these and he wanted to have them by Xmas I was a bit worried whether I could finish them in time or not. He also wanted the process documented along the way. I took quite a few pictures from a slab of Mesquite to the finish. If you would like to see a more detailed process please visit my Flickr site. Look under the set called (Lee M. Sets Process to Completion). click here Ricks Handcrafts

This starts out with a slab of Mesquite 12" to 14" wide 2" thick by about 9' long.

Since I can only figure out how to post 6 pictures I will post the results. Again please vist my Flickr Page to see most of the in between….

Those are beautiful! That is some of that pink mesquite like I got from the "hill country" of Tx. I'll bet your shop smells great!

Yes it does Andy, it is pink and then a greenish sliding into the browns. I was very pleased with the colors of that slab. Thank you for noticing…. The Dominos came out of another that was incredibly straight grained along the outer bands of the slab. But thats all on Flickr. Maybe I can get on with that other project now. I still have another Jatoba to do this year and a Mesquite one if I can fit it in. I have both of those domino sets made so its just the boxes this time…..

I totally understand. When you do things for money, rather than enjoyment, it takes the fun out of it. People will rarely pay for the emotional investment that goes along with time. Great photos, nice tools and skills for the job!

Thanks for the kind words and the interest.
These were the most difficult boxes thus far. Odd how you come across a piece of timber that just doesn't want to be worked. I have built quite a few of these Mesquite boxes but this is the first time I have had such a fit with them. This time I just had a few more pieces that had to go into the BBQers box I always save.
That's the goal Sufside to get better everyday and learn as much as possible.
