I started builing this podium back in August, and really took my time with it. I was asked to build it by the Edmonton Police Association (EPA), essentially the police union. The president of the association wanted a nice podium for meetings and media releases. After shopping around on line for some time and finding nothing of quality for a good price, they asked me to custom build something. I found a picture on the internet of the rough design for this podium, and then essentially designed the build myself.
This podium is all solid walnut, most of it a full 7/8” thick. The crest in the top portion was laser etched into the wood. I used hand cut dovetail joinery for the top and base, keeping the grain oriented vertically. The raised panels are also 7/8” thick and rabetted into the rails and stiles. I essentially built the podium in 4 parts, the base, the upright case, the top, and the shelf. I shaped an integrated paper rest on the top using a piece of figured walnut. All of the walnut was hand planed and scraped before finishing. I documented much of the build process with photos that I may post if people would like. The finish is dark walnut Danish oil and wipe on varnish.
The podium was very well received and the EPA president was very happy with it. It was a fun project and I hope to do more podiums like this in the future.
