Craftsman Plant/Vase Stands

Project by schroeder posted 565 days ago 629 views 4 times favorited 10 comments Add to Favorites Watch

A client who owns a gallery ordered two of these Black Walnut vase/plant stands. Since I was already building 2, I batched out 5. The two oak ones were built for friends, (the gallery ended up buying all 3 of the Walnut ones). The design is roughly based on a Woodsmith plan. The tops are Black Walnut on a ply base with a tile grouted in the frame. The oak ones were fumed for 24 hours. All were finished with 2 coats poly-sealer & 3 coats polyurethane.

As I was finishing last week, I had an epiphany and called the huz portion of my friends who are getting the 2 oak stands and suggested that he take his two young sons to the local craft store and have them paint a couple tiles and have them fired for the center of their stands – they could give them to their mom for Mothers day. It all worked out just right and I finished them last night. I’m sure she’ll like them!

nice stands. Love the custom tile idea. My mom did a custom tile for my wife and I when we were married… I’d love to have my daughter return the gift – but I”ll kick it up a notch with a frame (trivet) or some such along these lines. Great Idea!.. I love your craftsman furniture with Walnut.

Nice job on these, Schroeder. My wife has been after me to make some of these. Nice touch with the tile. Should hold up a little better to the water from the flower pots.

Schroeder, you continue to create true classics.

The personalized tiles were a great idea, those pieces will be ever treasured I am sure.

These are all gorgeous stands. You did a good job with the construction and staining on the oak ones. Fuming is a technique that is not used by a lot of woodworkers but it does produce a classic color.

Well done.
