This time last year, this was my pride and joy! I ordered the Lowboy plan from New Yankee, and a set of legs! I spent over a month building this piece. I took my time, and made sure all my joinery was tight. I think I used every tool in the shop on this project. The sides are one piece, 13” wide figured cherry. The top is 2 wide boards. The top, and the 3 lower drawers are faced from 2 matching boards, and are constructed with rabbeted half blind, and through dovetails. The secondary wood is oak. The finials were turned by a friend out of state. I don’t own a lathe yet…...maybe this year? This piece very proudly sits in the living room! I admire it every day!
Revised: Here are the 2 one piece side panels on the Lowboy. Look at that crotch grain!!

People can say what ever they want to about Norm not being a real craftsman. I think he is the best. I know he has a lot of tools and I think those people are jealous of him. He’s been around for many years working his craft and has become one of the best. Coping any of his work and it turning out as good as his is a great accomplish- ment. You done good my friend.
Jim

By the way…Was his plan easy to follow. And how detailed is the video ? (If you got the video too).
Norm can turn one of those out in half an hour. LOL Just kidding.

Thanks guys!! jjohn, the thing I do when I start a New Yankee project is to study the video. I watched this video, and the highboy video so many times, my girlfriend could’ve probably built one!!! I also learned to look in the background to see what Norm has cooking around the shop. He often shows you different things in frame, and if you pay attention (or record them off the tv, like I do) you can learn a lot!! The Plan was perfect, and very detailed. I did find an error in the Highboy plan with the amount of lumber called out for the upper straight moldings. The specified amount would only fit one side, with some overlap for the miters. I wish I would’ve had carving tools to carve the fan in the middle drawer. I was working part time then, in a very bad time. This piece made me feel good about myself again!!

Matt,

Another great piece. Did I read correctly that you ordered the legs? You’ve certainly got the skills to make them yourself. Give it a try. Email me if you run into stumbling blocks along the way. I’ll do my best to help you out.

Great wood selection. Nicely done.
