Wall Hung Chess Board

My daughter-in-law asked for a wall hung chess board as a Christmas gift to her brother. She mentioned that she had seen these on web and they were pricey. Her brother has a very nice set of chess pieces that will be displayed on the board. Chess pieces are just shy of 3” tall and most pieces have 1” base. Board squares are 3 1/8” x 3 1/8”. Shelves are 2 1/4”w plexiglass that fit nicely in a saw kerf.

The board is oak and walnut with a low-luster tung oil finish. I’ve installed a french cleat for hanging the board to the wall.

Fun project.

Very cool. All the wall hung chess boards I’ve seen are stretched into a more rectangular shape like a piece of letter paper. I prefer the square look. Call me old fashioned.

Hi Brian,

When I sat and made my first sketch it was rectangular. To my (highly untrained) eye, it just didn’t look right. Thanks for the validation.

Neat idea. Just need some way to indicate whose turn it is and you could have a running chess game going in the house.

I made one of the hanging boards to hang up at work. Mine was rectangular shaped and I have to admit, it did take a bit of getting used to but after a bit, it just seemed normal.

Lots of people playing as they pass by it but I have had to replace the set once already as one of the bishops went for a walk. One of the cleaners probably swept him away. Thankfully it was a cheap set and has been replaced with an even cheaper set :)

Excellent job by the way Nicky!!
