This is my second large turning, approximately 18 inches by 4 inches.
This was from the second of two trunk sections of a pine tree.
The damage from the termites living in the wood is more evident, as is the spalting.
I have identified the 4 types of spalting in this single piece of wood (pigmentation, white rot, zone lines, and brown rot).
Additional work is visible at: https://www.facebook.com/pndswipes
Thanks

Is that a crack in the top right of the first pic? Drats! Hate it when that happens…...Good choice of wood though, lot’s of different colors and effects from the termite tunnels and rot/spalting.

Doug, yes it is a crack.
I appeared after I brought it in the house where it’s warmer and dryer.
I half expected it considering the wood was fairly wet when I started turning it.
Considering the otherwise rough nature of the piece I’m not even going to worry about the crack unless it becomes a structural issue.
Speaking of structure, there is about a 1 inch square piece missing at about the 1 o’clock position in picture 1, and another chunk flew off the edge as I started hollowing the center.
I often work in wood that is well past punky…my general rule is to stand well clear of the wood when I first start the lathe to see how much flies off before I start tooling.
With this piece I was slinging live termites all over the shop the first day, so I had to dismount the piece and put it in a trash bag and pour some paint thinner in it to kill them off. There are actually some dead termites still in their tunnels.
