I turned this pen out of spalted black heart sassafras. This wood has such a unique and pleasant smell to it. I could only lathe the pen to about 1/4 inch of the final dimensions because those black lines are actually voids in the wood. I ended up using sand paper to get it to the final dimensions. To finish the pen, i filled all the voids with CA glue, then applied the CA glue finish. I used a micromesh kit to polish the acrylic to 12,000 grit the buffed with an finishing cleaner/wax. I am very happy with the results of this pen
