A Storage Upgrade or Compromise?

Project by smitty1 posted 566 days ago 617 views 0 times favorited 14 comments Add to Favorites Watch

Every woodworker knows the frustration of dealing with a given space to not only work in but appropriate a space for machines, tools and supplies but also the acquisition of newer tools or even more important-‘Lumber’.
When the opportunity came along for us to acquire a sizable quantity ( 1000 Bf ) of Maple and already stocked to the ceiling, we just couldn’t pass it up but where would this load be placed.
Unknowingly, our ‘significant other’ is many times instrumental in solving these dilemmas’. As many of us who are woodworkers, we are also homeowners and with those humble abodes come the responsibilities of property maintenance so naturally we have all the equipment at our discretion for the chore. Since our garden equipment shed had just about outgrown its useful purpose and showing many signs and years of deterriation, our lumber storage situation was easily solved when the Mrs. Suggested she needed a new garden shed next to her flower garden. With that said, we had the opportunity to draft up some plans to accommodate both parties and especially our own hunger for lumber.
Setting on piers set 3’ deep, we constructed a 12’ x 12’ barn style garden shed with ample room for a potting bench, garden tools, lawn equipment and of course a wall for lumber storage. A double door at one end provides easy access for getting equipment in and out and a side door accessed off of the porch to the potting bench inside.

I think the Mrs. is going to have to work hard to make her grarden look as good as this shed. I think I would be renting this out as a small cottage.
Nice design, Great workmenship.

Smitty,

You have come up with a winning combination here. Everyone gets what they want. Nice idea to put the lawn equipment in the shed as well. I wish I could do that. Then I would get a sizable portion of my shop back.

Thanks for the post.

You constructed one of the best looking sheds that I have ever seen, Wow! I’m not letting my wife see this one, she wants chicken… I really like the deck idea.

That is one great looking solution. I hope to be able to build one of these someday.

Smitty,

That is what I need. The storage that I built at the end of my shop is getting to full…. Which I could find plans like this one….. You say you drew these up yourself?

Thanks everyone for the approval on the shed. Inside Shots? Never thought about that , but it’s just the usual shovels , rakes, mower, weed eater , tiller etc- you get the idea but if we get a chance we’ll see what we can do.
As far as plans, many can be found on the web but I decided on this and culminated several ideas together, It’s really just basic framing construction 2” x 4” framing , headers Etc. The doors are all hand made and the Mrs picked out the hardware, trim and colors. The only problem I had when drawing this up with Punch Home design CAD was with the roof framing. I had never constructed the rafter framing like this before so I cheated and used a program called Easy Rafters which helped a lot.
Thanks Again for the comments,
Have a Good One,
Smitty
