Box with a hidden drawer

Hard maple box with African mahogany accents. This is basically a box made of scraps and pre-cut leftovers that I cobbled together—design came as I was building. It’s about 10 inches by five by five, give or take.

Drawer is mitered with a single, hand-cut, rabbetted, half blind dovetail that basically disappears when it’s shut (only thing that makes it stand out is the lack of splines compared to the back). The hand-cut dovetails are starting to come along… figure a few hundred more and they might start being seamless… Two notches underneath provide it with enough pull to allow me to skip putting on a handle.

Originally built it with a false bottom, but couldn’t figure out a way to get the false bottom out (it was such a tight fit). Gave up, added some glue, made it permanent—though, there’s a hole in the underside big enough to slip a rolled up dollar bill or two inside but might be a bit tricky getting it back out…

Finished with Tung oil.

You’re not supposed to get the money out, it’s an investment, just like woodworking. The screenwriter in you has to admit you got pretty good production values in this, a very pretty piece. How very brave of you to show the dovetail though, first draft you say?

Thanks guys. Had no real intentions going into it, other than hand-cutting a half-blind dovetail, but glad it’s being so well received.
