Mom wanted me to make her a yarn box (http://www.etsy.com/listing/85088756/curley-maple-yarn-box). This is what I came up with. It’s 100% maple. This is my first project using dovetails. I cut them by hand so there are a fair amount of gaps. For a first dovetail project, I don’t think it turned out too bad though. From across the room, it looks great. Attaching the hinges actually was a bit of a challenge. I had to use a #4 brass screw which are fairly delicate. I pre-drilled the holes but I still ended up bending one & broke another off in its hole (that sucked). Anyway, I ended up buying steel screws & coating them in wax. I drove them in & backed them out. Then I coated the brass screws in wax & drove them in by hand. It was a little extra work but it worked like a dream.

Well you made a few mistakes, learned some new techniques, and in the process made a great looking yarn box AND made mom happy. What more could a guy ask for?

I like the top swirl a lot. Also, the dovetailing style is interesting… one half-blind edge on every side looks neat.
