Sycamore Bowl Sycamore Bowl Sycamore Bowl Click the pictures to enlarge them

Going to the driving range one day I saw someone cutting down one of the many Sycamore trees in San Leandro. This bowl was one of 5 or 6 I got out of the logs I took from the pile.

The bowl started out as a natural edge bowl that was pretty boring. I took my plumbing torch and held the flame against it while it turned on my lathe. I didn’t like how it looked so I started turning the outside off. Once I cleaned up the outside I kind of liked how it looked… I returned to the torch and burned just the endge of the outside to accent the rough edge.

The bowl sat on my TV (where they all go before I finish them) and i wanted to add something to it to make people pick it up to look. I bought one carving tool and started on the bottom. The finished product is what you see here only the bottom doesn’t have finish on it yet.

Sycamore’s a fiesty wood – looks like you did well with it…

The carving is great.

Fiesty is a kind word for it Dorje…I’ll post the other ones I did both of which the tenon broke of and sent the bowl flying across the shop. The wood is so stinking hard the bowls were undamaged other than the tenon.

I have stayed away from sycamore, but you have me thinking of trying it. Nice looking bowl!

I love the treatment on the bottom. I have been considering trying some limited carving. What kind of carving tool did you use?

Trifern,

Not having any experience carving before this bowl I didn’t spend too much money. It was a $25 tool from Woodcraft. It has a short brown handle on it and there is a number 9 stamped on the shaft of the tool. Sorry the description can’t be better but there is no name on the tool. I have since purchased another tool by the same manufacturer as well as a couple longer handled tools from the Japan Woodworker which is located about 5 miles from me (nice place if you can get there).
