We got a microscope for science class but, all it came with to protect it was a plastic bag like cover. I remember them in my day always being kept in wood boxes so we made one. The white is enameled Masonite type stuff whatever it is properly called. Top and bottom plywood the corners basic trim molding.

We put felt pads on the bottom t protect whatever surface we set the box on. There was a reason we put the hinges on the outside, I just forget what it was. I made the knob and think the catch was a little artsy.

I know it’s crude and none to well put together. It was done in a hurry and I have little experience at joinery. In fact, hand cut dove tails is as good as I’ve got for now but, with the building up of the shop we are going to definitely work on that.

That is a great way to protect your investment. As far as being “crude and none to well put together”, now you don’t have to worry about it getting bumped or scratched. I don’t know how many “homeschoolers” you have but if they are anything like ours, this box will get used and abused.

Good job, Jim. I like your corner of the barn too!

3 boys and you can call them “rough riders!” Lol. I swear, I think they are harder on stuff than I was!(am? ;)

The new shop I’m building is as much theirs as mine. We hope to learn it well. I am disabled and limited in what and how much I can do and it seems to take forever for me to accomplish anything. But, we’ll muddle along.

That brown strap in there is a piece of leather, btw.
