This is a hall table I made for a client. The top is curly walnut veneer, edged in maple and walnut.
I wish I had taken a picture of the front, the grain on the apron is much prettier.
The finish is 3 coats of witches brew and then waxed.
Thanks for looking.
Dave

Really beautiful piece. I’ve seen a stretch of curly walnut before, but not that much.

This is a beautiful table. You picked a good choice of woods as well. I agree with the comments on the figured walnut. That is a gorgeous pattern.
Thanks for the post.

That is a nice looking table. First for my too, on that much figure in walnut. Are you sure that’s not some of that Chinaberry wood? :]

Dave:
You need to provide us, as we stand in awe, the finish information as well. I’ve never seen walnut looking like that, either, and as you obivously know finishing a gorgeous piece of wood can either detract or enhance the natural beauty. This is amazing!! Tell us! Tell us!

Hi Dave;
Ditto to the above compliments, on both the wood and the work.

Man that’s gorgeous. How are you gonna use it though? I can’t see ever wanting to put anything on it and blocking the view of that awesome top.

Thanks to all for the wonderful comments. I do have a good supplier on figured veneer, he has sold me some awesome stuff, just waiting for the right project.
The finish is a witches brew, my formula is 1/3 BLO. 1/3 mineral spirits and 1/3 poly or alcalyd varnish. Sometimes I will substitute Tung oil for the BLO. I usually put the first coat on kinda heavy, making sure it soaks in good, then wipe off the residue. I let that dry, most of the time its 24 hours. Wet sand with 600 grit to level it out and remove any nibs. Then I apply two to three more coats over the next couple of days. I rarely need to sand between those coats. Then depending on the clients preference for sheen, I will either wax it, or dull it down some with 00000 steel wool and wax.
I have been using this “brew” for almost 6 years and have not had any durability problems. So as they say,”stick with what works”.
Thanks again,
Dave

Well you’ve done it now. How can you top that? That is by far, one of the most fantastic grain patterns I’ve ever seen. Nice job. I know it will be envied by us “almost there” woodworkers. Thanks for posting.
