Daughter's B-Day Boxes Daughter's B-Day Boxes Daughter's B-Day Boxes Click the pictures to enlarge them

I decided to do a couple boxes for my daughter’s 3rd birthday. The larger box was built with the intentions of housing her “princess” jewelry. It is constructed of Cherry and Cocobolo. The cocobolo on the lid is recessed to be flush with the cherry. The dovetails are actually keyed dovetails to add to the aesthetics as well as the weak butt joints. Since the keys are evenly spaced in relation to the top and bottom, I was able to make a jig with one setup for all eight keys. It’s pictured below.

The fence is mitered to 45 and screwed to a miter gauge. The tall support sets the key location as well as aids in pushing the jig through the bit. Finish was gel varnish from GF’s.

The smaller box is for her tithing at church. The third picture shows 2 felt pads. They hide two rare earth magnets. The box has two recessed nails with their heads cut off. They keep the lid snug. Finish is water-based cherry on the oak stock. Didn’t love the water based version from GF, but it was simple and fast. Both boxes are lined with self adhesive felt.

Jeff,

This is a gorgeous pair of boxes. I really like their design and build. Your ingenuity, as is seen in the jig, never ceases to amaze me.

This is a nice post and I am sure that your daughter is delighted with the boxes.

Thanks for the post.

those are nice Jeff. If she’s like my little girl, she will have the jewelry box full in no time.

Boxes fit for a princess. Nice job.

Jeff,

Great boxes. I am also glad to know your three year old is learning the benefits of tithing at a very early age. Neither you, nor she, will ever regret it.

Is that an old Sears router table? My hats off to you. Your work is looking good.

Good eye Odie. Yeah that a Craftman Benchtop Router table. I took the legs off and mounted it to table. I am far from in love with it, but it is getting me by until I can build/purchase something more functional. Check out my workshop photos to see the mounted shots.
