This is a box I started quite a while ago from maple scraps with walnut accents (also scrap).
I made the lid from birds eye maple veneer. It was one of my first times veneering-I used the iron on method.
I formed the lid lift on a bandsaw and hand sanded to finish. I used the router table method of mortising the hinges as shown on the fine woodworking video. Once the router table has been set up to properly I hate to take the bit out to do any other type of routing.
It is finished with multiple coats of shellac and hand rubbed with 0000 steel wool & paste wax.
I have given this box to a local charity for silent auction w/proceeds going to a local soup kitchen.

Nice box, good cause

Very nice …I like your spline placement and the handle looks great as well : )

thanks for the kind compliments.
I tried placing the splines in a symmetrical pattern & I had a nice, very small, piece of figured maple scrap that I laminated with some walnut scraps to make the lid lift.
I will find out in about 1 month how much the box brings in the silent auction.

Very nice…I have sketched up my spline jig plans but haven’t gotten to the
‘making it’ stage yet…this may have given me the boost to get going on it…
