Round keepsake box

Some time back a friend gave me a end piece of aromatic red cedar. Put this on my lathe, starting turning not knowing what I was going to end up with. The log had a split so I had to work around that until most of the split was gone. Ended up with about a 5 inch diameter log.
This is one of three pieces I was able to get out of the log. It started as a round bird house and still may be but for now going to say its a keepsake box.
Fun working with. Still not happy with my finish product and taking pictures isn’t a strong point for me either.

Nice box Tom, and nicely turned, always risky with split logs, but be aware the timber will probably keep splitting, so what, it all adds to the character. It would most likely be the top that splits, the box, if the wall are turned thin enough would probably go miss-shaped. I have had several logs of Hawthorne given me that have been badly stored, they are full of splits and are very spalted. I will get something out of them when the mood takes me.

Beautiful piece. I would leave it a keepsake box.

-- Mother Nature created it, I just assemble it.

Very nice, you’re way ahead of me at turning Thomas.
