I built this for my father’s 60th birthday. He’s very tough to buy for and I know how much he likes American history and especially Ben Franklin, so when I found this great quote it inspired me to build it.

I used Cherry and Bloodwood board, which I had to make square so that they would align perfectly to create an American flag stripes look.

The lettering was bought at our local Michael’s craft store.

Ben Franklin head graphic: Being a professional designer, I am well versed in professional image software (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.), so I found free Ben Franklin vector artwork and refined the artwork in Illustrator. When I was happy with the graphics I printed it onto transparency film and attached it to the wood with spray adhesive.

After everything was glued to the board, I used 5 layers of clear coat and it was ready to go!

BTW: The saying is as follows (it’s kind of hard to read in the pictures).
Be at war with your vices,
at peace with your neighbors,
and let every new year
find you a better man

Wise words from such an honorable man. Splendid gift.
