Just joined Lumberjocks and wanted to upload at least one project so here is a recent one! The box uses a variety of timbers from Australia (and one from Fiji).
- Kauri (Fijian) for the sides and lid.
- Native Olive Veneer (for the outer lid and outer base).
- Leatherwood Veneer (for the inner lid and inner base).
- Blackwood (for the mitre keys and splines).
- Plywood used for veneer substrate.
Standard splined mitre joints and a rebate cut into the the lid so it sits nicely on top.
Box is currently in use storing my tax receipts. :-/.
Regards,
Cal

Cal,
This is a very nice box. You selected a good combination of woods in the construction.
Nicely done. I enjoyed looking at this.

It’s nice to see a simple box that has that much thought put in to the choice of woods, excellent finish, and appealing joinery. you’ve made a great box that is welcomed here.

I like the spline joinery. I am trying to create a jig for that so I dont get frustrated anymore, but it will happen soon enough. I like the different types of wood used. Welcome to Lumberjocks!!

Hi Swodaddy,
Agreed – I used a jig for cutting the splines in the box sides on the router table. The slots for the spines are about 1/16” thick, cut with the smallest slot cutter I could find (CMT). I used the equivalent of a zero-clearance-insert on the router table fence so that only the cutting head was exposed and then made a 45-degree jig to hold the workpiece.
