In my wood carving class at Red Rocks Community College this last spring, our class was asked to make a crest/logo design. Fortunately this first assignment (it being good for me since im a 19 year old college kid) we recieved free basswood to create something on. My nickname being birdman and my joy for music, i created this idea of a bird with hands playing the piano. This was my first woodcarving ever and i finished it after more than 45 hours of work on this piece. I used a burning tool to make the piano keys and bird details. I then used some Padauk wood scraps that i recieved from a classmate of mine who was about to throw it away. I then finished it with amber shellac.

Steve,
This is certainly an unusual carving. I enjoy seeing this talent expressed by those to whom it has been gifted.
Nice job and you did a good job with the finish as well.

And this was your first attempt at woodcarving?! It’s something I have always put in the ‘Too Hard’ category. Great project!
