I have finished the second coffee shop project – this one I’ve had planned since before we opened!
I knew I wanted to build a stand for the iPad we use in our coffee shop as our POS (Point of Sale) Square register. I’ve spent months trolling the web for pictures of stands others have made and for the longest time didn’t find much at all.
I recently came across a version made by the guys over at TinkeringMonkey.com and knew I found what I was looking for. I wasn’t crazy about all aspects of their design, so of course I made my own little changes.
Materials used in mostly just oak-veneered plywood I had left over from other projects. So a little time, a little edge banding and a lot of excitement later, it’s in use and getting great reviews from our customers! Finish is natural with some wipe-on polyurethane to match the rest of the coffee counter.
One of our regulars actually did a little write-up about it in his Tech & Design blog, http://solidsmack.com/design/the-diy-wood-ipad-stand-that-screams-styleprevents-tablet-jabbing-violence/

OK, “NOW” I get the POS remark! Had me worried for a moment! This all makes sense now… Well done!

Looks great. I have used the square in the past at softball tournaments for action photography POS also. I like your stand.

Very nice. Does it pop the cash drawer open?

Looks great! The only thing I saw in the other one that might be worth modifying is opening up the other side for a charger if necessary.

Matt – yes, the iPad/app can open the cash drawer – in combination with a networked receipt printer, which we have but don’t really use. If someone wants a receipt, they prefer it be texted it emailed instead of printed.

Jeff – it was intentional on my part to not include the charger access. We don’t leave it plugged in while in use, and if I ever change my mind, a quick trip to the drill press and a small rasp and I’ll be good to go.

P O S … Point Of Sale, or something like that. Quite a different meaning in a text message it would be “piece of shit”

Awesome idea and execution!
Is there a way to secure this to the cash box/counter? It seems pretty easy to me for someone to simply grab and run with it.
Great job!

Bob – the coffee cafe is inside my church, so I’m really not concerned about it. But if I were, I can think of a few ways to utilize the cash drawer it sits on to be able to attach (either permanently or temporarily) to for a more secure stand.

Jchon – Nice job! I’m just curious, do you know how long it took to build from start to finish?
For those curious about Jchon’s inspiration, our original stand is here: http://www.tinkeringmonkey.com/square-register-stand
