Meditation bench

Project by Ben Griffith posted 578 days ago 578 views 1 time favorited 10 comments Add to Favorites Watch

I made this for my wife for her birthday. I “borrowed” the design for the bench from similar ones I saw for sale on etsy.com. The bench is made of maple, and the lotus flower inlay is cherry, as are the pegs. It’s 24” long, 7 1/4” wide, and 7 1/4” tall.
This was my first try at inlaying anything, and I’m fairly pleased with the outcome. I made a few small goofs cutting out the recess for the inlay, but they don’t show up until you look fairly closely.
The bench is finished with a coat of garnet shellac and three coats of Polycrylic.

Looks good for a first try. I need to get to the point that I will go ahead and take the plunge and give it a try.
Nice job on the whole project.

Very Nice!! If that’s your first try, I can’t wait to see what you make when you’ve practiced! Great Job, thanks for the post!

Gorgeous bench and beautiful inlay. I would find it difficult to meditate though. I would simply reflect on the beauty and craftsmanship of the bench.

Nice work. I really like the flower. I wouldn’t have known about the flaw if you hadn’t said it.

Griffith,

This is a beautiful bench. You did a nice job in the construction and inlay. I love the wood combination. Maple and cherry are my personal favorite. Nice job on the finish as well.

Thanks for the post.

this is wonderful.
you could really get lost in the moment as you “became one with” the flower.

Hello Ben;
—-great show of your woodworking talents here!

I also like the choice of wood you have used here, maple and cherry….along with the use of the ‘garnet shellac’.

I also noticed that what you refer to as ‘goofs’ in the inlay cutting….like down there at the bottom on the left side, around about 5 o’clock….actually gives the appearance of gong 3D or multi dimensional.

Thank you for sharing….
GODSPEED,
Frank

A great design. And way to step up to the board and tackle the job. It shows a labor of love.
