Completed 1991. This European-style woodworking bench is constructed of birch and maple. The top is salvaged bowling alley floor. The shoulder vice, tail vice, and holdfasts provide a lot of options to secure the work. I made the bench dog holes too tight and that has been a pain for decades (woodworking tolerances are not always a good thing.) Somewhere along the line I quit treating it like a piece of furniture and it no longer looks like the first three photos!
I added a cabinet later that sits between the legs and under the top. This was a project I used to teach my Dad how to do cabinet construction, mortise and tenon joints, raised panel doors, and dovetailed drawers.

Great looking bench but then again I have a work bench fetish. I am almost done with a split roubo. I need to get a couple work lamps like yours. Down the road I’ll add an “under cabinet” to mine as well.
Well done sir.

Your bench is like a BMW and mine is more like a Chevy. I checked out your blog…wow! You need to make a stray cut in it (in a real obvious place) on the same day you declare it finished just to get it over with.

We have been talking about that and I will but I just haven’t decided on the mechanism and symbolism.
