Project Information

This is a small jewelry box that I made as a morning gift for my wife. It was given away containing a pair of earrings.

I made the box of a piece of unidentified tropical hardwood. Maybe some of you can see from the pictures what kind of wood it is?

I sawed the box out roughly by hand and then continued to shape it with a dremel. When that was finished I sawed of the top to form a lid. The box was then hollowed out with the dremel.

The lid is kept in place with three pairs of small rare earth magnets that are glued in place. The lid can either be removed completely or be slid to the side, with one pair of magnets acting as a pivot, to reveal the contents.

There is no finish on the box since it got a very smooth and nice looking satin finish just by sanding it carefully.

Can't figure out the wood species from the pictures, but it's very nice :) Unexpected gifts like these get hubby points every time ;)
