Caught the turning bug at Easter. This is a piece of Myrtle I bought at a wood turning exhibition along with a Mini Lathe. Never had so much fun. A lot of firewood to make this.
Bob.
2nd photo is a piece of Australain Paperbark. Cut a branch of our tree when I need something to practice on.
Wood was still wet when I tried to put some polish on. Learn by your mistakes. Another lesson was learnt on this one, “don’t complete the turning when wood is green. This has since split at the top, but the ring is still complete.

Bob,
These are nice bowls. The ring does add some unusual visual interest to them. I am sorry to learn of your addiction but the only cure is to simply keep on turning. :)
By the way I am becoming addicted to turning as well, and I have not added a lathe to my tool collection. Maybe I could get one if I ask my wife for an advance on my allowance.
Thanks for the post.

Hi Scot, it cost me an Embroidery machine. I’m sweet now and I think I might try for an upgrade on the Lathe. It’s an addiction alright but really enjoyable. Get a Lathe, tell her you will be out from under her feet. Or do the housework for awhile.

Same here, I bought mine last year but have treated it poorly this winter, no dates no dinner not even a cuddle. I’ll try to remedy that this summer.
Nice work on the bowl , the ring is really nice, what gave you the idea?

Snowdog. I just set myself a challenge. A bowls a bowl but a bowl with a ring is difference. Don’t worry I lost a lot before I finally ended up with one whole.

Very nice Bob. I’ve got the addiction, too. I am still working on a “good” bowl. I have done several that are less than presentation quality.

Nice turning Bob. I have got that addiction thing too. Maybe we should start a support group. My daughter has been telling me for a couple of weeks to stop turning bowls and make her some pens. I manage to turn out 4 yesterday. Now I am really confused; pens or bowls?

Join the club rikkor. I have made a lot of firewood that I haven’t told anyone about. Hope you crack a good one soon.
Can’t help with the decision trifern. I have 3 bowls and 2 vases ready to go, no requests for a pen.
There would be plenty of volunteers for a support group.

Nice work Bob. Did you buy a captive ring tool or did you use something else? I find lidded boxes to be a lot of fun and a bit of a challenge to make the lid fit just right.

Beautiful work, Bob.
I’d like to get a lathe, but I don’t know if my marriage or my wallet can stand another addiction. :-)

Thanks again for the comments. Looks like some of you have a problem, Lathe or Marriage, they both demand a lot from you but the lathe doesn’t talk back and you can get continuous enjoyment from it.
My wife hasn’t read this. To busy on her Embroidery machine which cost more that my Lathe. Waiting to see more from you Pat.
Todd, now you will find out what a novice I am, I used the parting tool to get the depth for the ring and the shaping of the pace to work, then the chisel with the V shaped end to work under and have used the 1/2” skew to help but lost some rings by this catching. The best tool is patience. What is a captive ring tool?

Bob,
A captive ring tool is a specialty tool with a half circle ground in it to make the ring. I thought about buying one but wouldn’t know how to sharpen it. You can see an example at the link below.
It seems as if you did a great job without one.

Todd. Thanks for the info. Sharpening looks like it could be a problem. Don’t know if I would buy one, there is a special feeling when you finally make a ring the hard way. Lot of interesting woodturning tools on site. Hope they don’t ship to Australia, my shed is full now. Lets know if you ever get one. Thanks Todd.
Thanks Grumpy.
Teenage.w.t. In my last comment above tells how I achieved the ring. Cutoff chisel to get deep enough
and make room to work and then patiences with what ever else you use. Hope you get a lathe soon, they can be so much fun and enjoyment. Bob.
