this box was pure joy and fun, as its been awhile since i did a box, Ive called this a secretary’s box because i intend it to be a place for my nephew to put his bills and a place to keep his stamps, This box is made with 10 different wood species, the main body of the box is Mimosa wood, isn’t it just beautiful, then the framing of the box and the bottom are walnut, the pen holder is red cedar and the top of the pen holder area is crotch walnut, and the bottom of the pen area is sweet gum, the top of the box is red cedar and the center panel is maple that i won from Oregon burls, i did an epoxy inlay with my nephews initials in it, that is made from blood wood and the heart is maple, there is a heart as his last name is Hartley, and his first name is shawnn, the hinges on the side are spalted oak and are pinned with 1/8 brass rods, the lift on the box is made from three woods, the main wood is Tasmanian eucalyptus burl , with poplar on the very top and on the back side is mahogany , it is glued and pinned with brass rod, it is sanded to 400 grit and finished with BLO. i cant wait for him to get this along with the chess board i just posted, thanks so much for looking and your comments, grizzman. by the way the beautiful pen here was made by our very own trublue, his work with pens is down right beautiful, thanks again Tim.

That is one beautiful box, Grizz. Mimosa is some beautiful wood. Too bad people, in our area, don’t appreciate it more.
It would be great if you have some in process photos. A blog of the assembly process would be great.

Love the wood combinations and the insert. This will be so useful for someone graduating from college… they have lots of bills!
