Since seeing a book review on this subject a few months back, I was curious about these instruments. I purchased a book called Hand Made Music Factory by Mike Orr. I was able to pick up the tuning pegs and strings from a local guitar shop and some handsome boxes for $3 a piece from the local cigar shop. The neck, which goes straight through the box is made from walnut left over from another project and the fret is curly maple resawed to 1/4 inch in thickness. I finished the pice with danish oil. I tuned it using an electronic tuner borrowed from a friend and it sounds nice to my untrained ear. I even tried iy out with an amp and the radio shack electronics complete with tone and volume controls work fine. I will take it to the guitar shop to see what their opinion is before I call it a complete success.

Either way, it is way cool as a conversation piece for the gameroom wall and I can’t wait to build another one. The next one will be a four string with metal frets.

Thanks for looking,

Tim

Love the creative hardware especially the sink strainers for sound holes – more like a dobro. I’ve always thought these would be fun to make and you may have pushed me into action. Thanks for sharing this project and the inspiration.

Neat project. If you want to hear what one of these can do check out Moreland and Arbuckle.
