Four weeks out from New Zealands national woodskills awards i had finished my other job so i could start making this for the awards. But this silly bugger decided to have a close incounter with some rocks at speed, i went for a ride on my Mt bike had a accident, over the handle bars and landed on some nice rocks and broke my thumb. So with hand in cast for the next six weeks i couldnt build it in time, oh well next year!
I have had this idea for this halltable for awhile. The idea i had for the form was clear in my head the hardest part was working out how to construct the floating draw runners and such wood movement.
As this was an speculitive work i made it totally out of radiata pine, even the draw pull which is stained with white vinagur mixed with iron fileings for two weeks. All the timber cut from 6by1 stock. Handcut dovetails and holes and joints, which was fun because all the pegs are tappered. And if you note the dovetails are the wrong way roundthe tails should be on the end so when you lift it the top is locked down, but because of its construction it needed to be that way.
As you can see it has no “box”, just a front and back rail , the draw carrier floats between the two rails.
900×1300x300, sanded to 150 and finished with a couple a coats of rustins tung oil.
You may not see but the ends of each board and peg and the drawpull is rouded.
