“Since 1999, Hopunion LLC, along with Brewing News Publications and Three Floyds Brewing Company, has been scouring the country for the best hop-laden beers in the land. Each year, a team of brewers and veteran beer writers test the vigor of each year’s hoppy findings and crown a new Alpha King, deeming his beer to be the holy grail of well-balanced and drinkable, yet highly-hopped ales.” – taken from the Alpha King Challenge Web Page.

This year Hopunion hired me to create the grand prize for this competition – a solid cherry Mash Paddle with a carved logo of this year’s themed “hop devil”. This year’s theme is vikings, if you couldn’t guess ;-) They expect over 100 entries in this years competition.

The carving of the letters in the handle as well as the logo was done via CNC Router. The hop leaves were cut by hand on my scrollsaw. 1 inch thick cherry is NOT easy to cut on a scrollsaw!

As this paddle might actually be used to create beer, the only treatment it received was a long soak in food-grade mineral oil.

It was a real honor creating this paddle knowing it will be used as the grand prize in such a large competition and I really enjoyed creating it.

Cheers!

Update on 11/7/2012: I have uploaded a photo of the winner of the event holding his new grand prize. The paddle, I was told, was a big hit at the competition. :-)

Great looking paddle, do you get to help sample/judge the beers? It would be a tough job, but someone has
to do it. Thank you for sharing.

Gus,

I would LOVE to be at the event, but being the competition is over 1600 miles (2575 km) away, I don’t think I will make it. ;-)

Thanks for the compliments!

You will never be up the creek without a paddle. A very nice one to boot.

I absolutely love your mash paddle designs, very well made. My brewing buddy is about to get married, would you be willing to make another?
