The wood on the top of this box is a piece of crazy figured and spalted maple that looked to me just like a sun over a mountain range. The sides are curly gummy cherry overall dimensions are roughly 4×8 x 4. I have started spotlighting the imperfect beauty in some of the boards I find. It is a bit of a challenge, but well worth the extra effort.

Excellent…I like the way you found the unique beauty of the maple on the top…It really is an eye catcher.

Another beautiful box. I too try to feature the “defects” and turn them into design features. I saw the sun over the mountains as soon as I clicked on this project.

This piece looks as if its still resting in natures preserve, so natural looking. Nice eye on design very striking…Blkcherry

Nothing could top the ‘Moon’ inlay that you did (IMHO); but this is a close second. You have a great eye to see the pictures in the wood.

Fantastic! I remember the first time I saw (and felt) a raised relief map when I was a kid and kept staring at the mountain ranges. This reminds me of that and makes it even better.

What a beautiful piece of wood. You did a fine job on the box too.
