Turned projects

I’ve been pretty busy doing some experimenting not only with bowls but using green wood and I am THRILLED to have learned a neat trick on drying my turnings if I am using wood. I put them in the microwave (of course one that I brought into the shop and not for food anymore) after I roughed shaped them leaving room to work with later. I set the timer for 1 minute, wrap it with a white paper towel and let it cool off. I repeated this for a few hours and letting it cool. Then I let them set a week just to see how much cracking was going to happen. Well, they barely had cracked! And this was mesquite wood. The last bowl is maple which cracked a bit but was able to work them out. Maple I found out cracks alot! But it seems to be doing good now. Then when after a week and also I bought a mositure meter just for this purpose and kept it at 8-10% moisture before I started to complete them. It was acutally fun to know how much moisture was in them and I know if I had just went and done them up I’d have run into bigger cracks. So it’s been a very exciting and delightful results! As you can see the mesquite is just awesome in the colors! Now..going to have to talk that guy out of more mesquite logs! I used a Myland high polish which is really a nice product I find I’ll be keeping in my studio. Thanks for looking. Still having a ball!

Very nice designs and color. It looks like you’ve mastered the lathe rather well. Ever tried anything like inlace or inlay on any of your projects. I’m not suggesting there is anything wrong with your work, on the contrary, it is some of the most beautiful turnings I’ve seen in a while,, well Charlie does pretty good too. Oh heck, I’m just sticking my dang foot in my mouth or up my nose or someplace it shouldn’t be. mike

These are gorgeous. I can see that you have been having fun.

Keep on turnin’.

Thanks for such wonderful comments! Gosh just makes me wanna turn some more! LOL Really tho it’s nice to have someone enjoy my turnings. I know what a inlay is, inlace I don’t know. And maybe if you show me a picture I’d understand. I’ve turned candlesticks using the 2 colors. That was fun to see how it would end up looking. Being a novice I’m like a sponge…wanna know this and that! I plan on doing some bowls from basswood and that’s going to be interesting as well. Thanks again..and love to know what the inlace means.

Cathy,

Great looking bowls, beautiful shapes and the finished polish is superb.

Right now, the website is being on hold until we get this updated and a differant approach. I’ll let you know when this happens. Thanks for asking.
