This natural Cherry Prairie Settle in spindles I just finished. It has a hand rubbed oil finish and I have been building these since my apprenticeship in Vermont back in 1995. This Prairie settle I have made in a chair all the way up to a couch.

Nice piece. Looks like you have a niche? Have you done South Western, or a contemporary interpretation for fun?

Well done Brian,
I particularly like the shape of the corbels, how they become thin and then slightly thicker at the bottom.
I usually glue corbels in a dado, but I know there are many ways to attach them. What is your favorite method?

So is Prairie considered a subset of Mission? or something else?

Thanks everyone. I will answer a few questions here. I Have my cushions subbed out by an upholster. I have way to much more woodworking to learn to have the time to take up Upholstery. I think I will just let it be two different fields for me. Ha! The corbels are dadoed and it makes them stronger and lines them up nice. Prairie furniture is furniture that resembles work of what is considered prairie school architects. (mainly Frank Lloyd Wright ) He designed a settle that looked like it could hold down a room. I will try to post a link to it later.
This piece is mainly arts and craft designed originally by Stickley,L&G Stickley with a few things that I like to change to lighten it to the eye some more like the corbels not being so sort of say “blocky” looking.

Brian – I wish I lived near you. I’d work some kind of knowledge swap with you or whatever so some of that fine craftsmanship would rub off on me. The upholstery for those wrap around cushions, no welt, easy to work with fabric, can be cut sewn and stuffed by a pro shop in an hour. I’m way out of practice so 2 hours.

That is one fine piece of furniture. Love the design and matte color of the cherry. Love the way the back meets up with the cushions. Simple and elegant.
