We had the carpeting in the upstairs of our house done with engineered hickory hardwood. I had them quote replacing the carpeting on the stairs with hardwood treads and found that it almost doubled the cost of the job – and it’s only thirteen steps!. I decided to do it myself.

The treads and center board are all 3/4”+ hickory with lots of coats of poly on them. The sides and backs are 1/4” walnut wrapping. I bought some stair rail kits to replace the ugly wrought iron rails.

The last picture shows the original stairs. I think they turned out pretty well – better than I would have paid to have done – and at a fraction of the cost.

Way better than the original. Good judgment.

Nice job! I am thinking about doing my stairs, this is encouraging.
