Sycamore Coffee Mug

A friend at work gave me some sycamore a couple of years ago from a tree that he took out of his yard. I coated the ends with sealer and put it away to dry. I finally got around to doing something with it. I decided to make something for myself for once, my own travel coffee mug.

I did have design modification. I had the skew chisel catch the middle of the piece and it put a deep gouge in the wood. I turned out the bad spot and glued in a piece of walnut. This turned out to be kind of like a feature ring.

The mug was stained with Min-Wax golden oak stain and then I put on a shellac sanding sealer. Next I gave it five coats of high gloss poly followed by a light buffing with renaissance wax.

Very nice.

Did you get parts from Rockler or just cut apart a different mug?
