After viewing several video's on making the miter sled I finally decided to make one myself. I ended up using a small combo square I had to set the the initial guide at 45 degrees to the kerf, as it fit into the kerf rather nicely. After the glue had dried I rechecked it with a speed square it seemed to be pretty much dead on.
After it was all done, I took a scrap piece I had laying around and cut 4 pieces using the same side of the guides for each piece (you should really use opposite sides for each side of a miter) and it came out very very close to perfect.
Overall, I am quite happy with it.
