Project Information

These pencil holders were made using a box joint jig I created for my table saw using my miter gauge. The jig worked ok, however I believe that there is a little slop in the miter gauge which may have caused some slight issues with the joint. Not sure yet as this was my first attempt, but I may end up making a full table saw sled for my dato set and using that as the base.

Material:
  • Sides: 3/8" BB Ply edged with walnut scraps
  • Bottom: 1/4" BB Ply

Joints:
  • Box Joint - for the sides
  • Rabbet / dado for the bottom

Project Firsts:
  • First Box Joint
  • First Rabbeted bottom set into a dado

I have not done the glue up, sanding or finishing yet, but I won't be able to get to those for a week or so due to work and family obligations.

**UPDATE: glue up and finish applied. (waterlox)

Enjoy and feel free to ask me any questions.

Those are nice looking box joints. The stripes of the plywood look cool on the ends. I just tried box joints for the first time on my fan project. I made a jig for my router table miter gauge and used a 1/4" straight bit. I put a couple layers of blue tape around the miter gauge to tighten it up in the slot and remove the play.

Steve, I will have to try your idea using the blue tape to reduce slop. I was thinking about making a sled but I was not sure if I wanted to try using a router table first. Seems like it would male for a very clean joint.

Those are really nice looking box joints, especially for a first attempt. Great Job.
