Inspired by the boxes posted by other LJ’s, and having several nice scraps of cherry, I’d thought I’d try my first box. My biggest challenge is getting my table saw and miter gauge adjusted to cut perfect 45 degree miters. I’m still working on that. After working with red oak, cherry was a nice change. The trim on the top and the keys are maple. I followed GaryK’s suggestions on wrapping fabric around cardboard with spray adhesive for the lining. (Thanks Gary, it worked great!)

Very nice box. Especially for your first one.

To get those perfect 45’s on your tablesaw try the followimg. I use both and get perfect results.

For your miter guage:

This is really a nice box. It’s got a very soft-warm feel to it.

Thanks for the kind words.
Gary, what techniques do you use to align your miter gauge to the blade, or perhaps a better way to phrase this is how do you insure your blade is parallel to the miter slots in your saw top?

Excellent work! I like the understated yet elegant lines.

I’m trying to figure out the construction of the top. Is it a panel set into a mitered frame?

Charlie,
That’s exactly right. The cherry lid has a rabbet that holds the maple mitered frame which is rabbeted to hold the cherry panel. I added another cherry panel on the underside to stabilize the whole thing.

Nice work Hailey. That is a box with class. It not only looks great but it will be very functional too. One thing for sure, you can’t go wrong using tips from GaryK. Thanks for the post.

That is a fine looking box. A box is more than just a six sided object, and each and every box is different from any other. The best part of making a box are the memories that come along with it.

This is a gorgeous box that I am sure was well received by your daughter. Maple and cherry are my personal favorite wood combinations.

I really like the construction on this box.

Thanks for the post.

Very nice box Hailey. I’m trying to learn box making myself and it’s no small task. Precision plays a big part and that’s something I’m really having to work on.

That’s a very nice box. What method did you use to round the corners – a router?

Very nice box. The good thing about them is, they are so easy to move from room to room. The bad thing is they get moved to another room.
