A labor of love! Experience at learning how something is made + Time spent together and the kids win. Sounds like a winner to me.

Thomas is it? I’‘m a Thomas also.
I’m feeling REALLY lucky that I can arrange an array of dowel holes like this and let the laser do the cutting… I usually cut through up to 1/4” mdf. If I need 1/2”, I make two of them, align, and glue-em-up.
My drilling skills are lacking…
