This was my first non-pen project made on the lathe. A simple wooden box. The stock was a “hardwood” dowel bought from Home Depot as practice material. I used it as a chance to practice some techniques with various tools. Sanded with just a quick touch of shellac for the finish.

Thank you! :)
It was a 2” dowel to start with. After turning, the end diameter is 1-3/4” and about 2” tall. My wife is using it to hold her stitch markers (for her knitting).

Looks good, especially for a first try. Didn’t know HD has 2” dowels, but then maybe not in Canada.

Nice job on the box. That sure looks bigger than a two inch dowel.

Yup, I’ve already been getting requests for more boxes to hold various things. :)

J, that looks really good. I not yet attempted a box, perhaps I need to. Like the idea as the dowel as a practice piece.

That’s really good. I never thought of using a dowel before, it’s a great idea.
