This mantle is my first. Made of 6” thick rough cut red cedar. I cleared off all the bark, even the deep crevice. I filled the crevices on top to the same level as the surface, and on the front, just enough so cleaning would be much easier without taking away from the character of the wood. The styles or uprights are 3” square finished with the same finish. The mantle is actually “hung” rather than attached to the wall. This way there is minimal damage to the wall and can be removed if need be. The whole project took me approx. 25 hours of solid labour. This, I think, is my favourite project thus far.
