I like it! What are the coloured things on the top and what kind of pins are under the ships to keep them in the holes?

The pins are 3/8 inch dowels…same as what the pegs would be while playing. The colored things are shot glasses. If your opponent calls that location, rather than inserting a pin, you would have to drink whatever you both choose to put in the shot glass…anything from beer to Southern Comfort! (obviously not a game for the kids)
